Quick facts
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Trek distance: about 3–4 km in total
- Time needed: 3–3.5 hours (plus the drive)
- Best season: October–February
- Good for: History lovers and regular trekkers
Where it is and how to get there
Early-morning start towards Achrol, north of Jaipur on the Delhi road. Like most Jaipur treks, it's done at sunrise, so plan to leave home in the dark. There's no public transport to trek bases at that hour — come on your own two-wheeler or car, or ride together with a group from a common meeting point.
The trek, step by step
- Before dawn: meet, do a quick headcount and safety briefing, switch on torches.
- The climb: The path winds up the hillside to crumbling walls, gateways and bastions with wide views over the countryside. Parts of the trail are rocky and overgrown, so long clothes and good shoes help. It's a great pick when you've done the city treks and want something a little different.
- Sunrise at the top: catch your breath, watch the light spread over the hills, take photos and refuel.
- The way down: go slower than you think — most slips happen on the descent. Most groups are back in the city by mid-morning.
Best time to go
- October–February: the best months — cool mornings and clear skies.
- July–September: the hills turn green and beautiful, but trails are slippery; go only with a group.
- March–June: hot — start before sunrise and finish early.
How fit do you need to be?
You'll enjoy this most if you're reasonably fit. In the week before, do 2–3 brisk walks or short jogs and a few rounds of stair climbing. On the day, start slow, breathe steadily on the uphill and keep sipping water. If it's your very first trek, an easier trail like Nahargarh or Chabutra is a good warm-up.
What to carry
- Shoes: trekking or sports shoes with good grip (no flat sandals)
- Water: 1–1.5 litres, plus a small snack
- Clothes: full-length and comfortable — many trails have thorny bushes; a light jacket in winter
- Light: a torch or phone light for the pre-dawn start
- Extras: cap, small backpack, ID and any personal medicines
Safety tips
- Don't trek alone, and don't take unfamiliar trails in the dark — go with a group and a leader who knows the route.
- Tell someone at home where you're going and when you'll be back.
- Watch your step on loose stones, especially on the way down.
- After rain, rocks get slippery — slow down or turn back if it's unsafe.
- In summer, finish before 8–9 am; the Aravalli heat builds fast.
Photography tips
- Reach the top 15–20 minutes before sunrise — the colours before the sun appears are often the best.
- Shoot people against the sky as silhouettes; it always works at sunrise.
- Use the ridgeline or trail as a leading line in your landscape shots.
- Keep your phone in a pocket on rocky sections — both hands free is safer.
Leave no trace
These hills are home to birds, peacocks, nilgai and the villages around them. Carry every wrapper and bottle back down, skip the loud music, and leave temples and old ruins exactly as you found them. Smoking and alcohol have no place on the trail.
